What should I look for when selecting a load cell for a harsh application?

cable
The cables from the load cell to the weighing system controller are also available in different materials to handle harsh operating conditions. Most load cells use cables with a polyurethane sheath to protect the cable from dust and moisture.

high temperature components
The load cells are temperature compensated to provide reliable weighing results from 0°F to 150°F. Load cells may give erratic readings or even fail when exposed to temperatures above 175°F unless you choose a unit that can withstand temperatures up to 400°F. High temperature load cells can be constructed with tool steel, aluminum or stainless steel elements, but with high temperature components including strain gauges, resistors, wires, solder, cables and adhesives.

sealing options
Load cells can be sealed in different ways to protect internal components from the environment. Environmentally sealed load cells can contain one or more of the following sealing methods: rubber boots that fit the load cell strain gauge cavity, caps that adhere to the cavity, or potting of the strain gauge cavity with a filler material such as 3M RTV . Either of these methods will protect the load cell’s internal components from dust, debris, and moderate moisture, such as that caused by splashing water during flushing. However, environmentally sealed load cells are not protected from high-pressure liquid cleaning or immersion during heavy washdowns.

Hermetically sealed load cells provide added protection for chemical applications or heavy washdowns. This load cell is usually made of stainless steel as this material is best suited to withstand these harsh applications. Load cells have welded caps or sleeves that encapsulate the strain gauge cavity. The cable entry area on the hermetically sealed load cell also has a welded barrier to prevent moisture from penetrating the load cell and shorting out. Although it is more expensive than environmentally sealed load cells, sealing provides a long-term solution for this type of application.

Weld-sealed load cells are suitable for applications where the load cell may occasionally be exposed to water, but it is not suitable for heavy wash down applications. Weld-sealed load cells provide a welded seal to the internal components of the load cell and are the same as hermetically sealed load cells, except for the cable entry area. This area in a weld-sealed load cell has no weld barrier. To help protect the cable from moisture, the cable entry area can be fitted with a conduit adapter so that the load cell cable can be threaded through the conduit to further protect it.
